A Successful Hands-On Internet Measurement with Censorship Case Study Workshop at Asian Institute of Technology, Pathum Thani, Thailand May 21, 2025

The intERLab at Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) recently hosted a half-day workshop in collaboration with the Internet Society , at AIT. This event provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the technical and methodological foundations needed to detect and analyze internet traffic. Main speakers included Dr. Amreesh Phokeer, Internet Measurement and Data Expert at the Internet Society, alongside Siti Nurliza Samsudin, a data analyst from the Sina Project, who were instrumental in guiding the discussions.

The workshop attracted a diverse and engaged audience, including students and researchers from various universities across Bangkok, alongside external technologists. The event was further enriched by a compelling opening speech from distinguished figure Professor Kanchana Kanchanasut, whose pioneering work laid the groundwork for digital access in southeast Asia and beyond. This vibrant mix fostered rich discussions and highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of network measurements, censorship analysis, and open data platforms. The presence of participants from multiple universities underscored the broad interest and collaborative spirit in addressing this complex issue.

Participants gained in-depth knowledge of how tools like OONI (Open Observatory of Network Interference) and Censored Planet gather and interpret crucial data. These insights are invaluable for understanding the often-hidden mechanisms of online interference and the strategies employed to restrict digital freedoms worldwide.

A highlight for many attendees was the culminating hands-on tutorial with OONI Explorer. This practical session empowered participants to directly utilize OONI tools to identify blocked websites, applying the knowledge gained to understand network-level interference. The interactive experience proved instrumental in solidifying theoretical concepts and demonstrating the practical application of censorship measurement techniques.

intERLab and the Internet Society remain dedicated to fostering such vital discussions and hands-on learning experiences that contribute to a more secure and equitable digital future.

The core component of the laboratory will be on research activities.
